Take a long weekend, or even a week trip. Make a decision to live like a local for a few days. Short-term rental companies like Airbnb can help you assimilate into the local culture. Stay at a couple of different places in different neighborhoods. If you can’t find anything close by, make sure to spend your time in your desired part of town.
